Club Montauk
Club Montauk is named after Montauk, Long Island, a real estate development originally conceived by Carl Fisher in the 1920s as the "Miami Beach of the North". Unfortunately the Montauk dream was cut short by the bursting Florida real estate bubble in 1926, stock market crash in 1929 and subsequent depression.
Who was Carl Fisher?
Carl Fisher was a true rags-to-riches-to-rags story. Suffering from extreme astigmatism that left him with very poor sight, Fisher left school at the age of 12. After starting a bicycle shop with two brothers he went on to launch the first automobile dealership in Indianapolis. His initial fortune was made by acquiring the patent for the first sealed automobile headlight. He also became involved in bicycle and auto racing. His long list of achievements include:
- Conceived and helped develop the Lincoln Highway, the first road across the U.S.A.
- Conceived and helped develop the north-south Dixie Highway
- Developed the unpopulated barrier island in Miami Florida resulting in Miami Beach
- Invested in a project that became known as the Indianapolis Motor Speedway
- His leadership led to the installation of 3.2 million paving bricks, leading to the nickname "the brickyard", resulting in the successful launch of the Indianapolis 500.
By 1926 Carl Fisher's fortune was estimated to be $100 million. He began development of Montauk Long Island, the "Miami Beach of the North". In 1932 he declared bankruptcy and was essentially penniless. His financial troubles began with a hurricane that devastated Miami Beach and continued with the stock market crash in 1929. The ensuing depression meant that development of a luxury resort such as Montauk no longer made economic sense. Carl Fisher lived the remainder of his life through the generosity of former financial partners who paid him a stipend of $500 per month.
